"Routes to Rootz is more than good vibes — it’s a movement, created for us, by us. Because we all deserve access to wellness in nature."

who we are

Routes to Rootz, formerly known as Hike MTL, is a non-profit organization governed by a board of directors, on a mission to reclaim the outdoors for Black, Indigenous, and people of color. We recognize that access to nature has historically been limited for these communities due to knowledge, financial, and cultural barriers. Founded by Jamillah Jean, we break down these obstacles by providing affordable access to outdoor activities through introductory events, workshops, and experiences. From hiking to winter sports, we challenge stereotypes and ensure everyone feels they belong in the Great Canadian outdoors. This is more than adventure — it's a movement for equity, wellness, and change.

the vision

The outdoors is for everyone and we aim to remove the stigma surrounding Black and POC communities and their involvement with the outdoors/nature. Our goal is to expand accessibility to nature-based initiatives (such as hiking, camping, skiing, snowboarding, and more) not for the sake of numbers, but for the sake of mental health.

the mission

We aim to inspire and encourage Black and POC families to indulge in nature and access the healing properties of the outdoors. Through the exploration of seasonal outdoor activities and active representation through instructors, participants will have the opportunity to explore connecting with nature in a safe, motivational, and respectful environment.

Inclusive
Access to Nature

Everyone deserves the outdoors. We break barriers, ensuring Black and POC communities feel welcome, safe, and empowered in nature. Nature is for everyone, and we’re reclaiming it.

Holistic
Well-Being

Our approach to wellness goes beyond physical fitness—nature is therapeutic and healing. We deserve access to these benefits, too. We create experiences that nurture mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being, using nature as a powerful tool for balance and restoration.

Environmental
Stewardship

We are committed to preserving the natural world for future generations. Our programs foster a deep respect for the environment, encouraging participants to practice sustainability, protect ecosystems, and become advocates for the planet. "Know nature, love nature, protect nature."

Empowerment

Through Education

Knowledge is power, and we provide educational programs that equip participants with the skills, tools, and confidence to navigate the outdoors. From demystifying nature to offering winter sports lessons and environmental workshops through learning, we reclaim and redefine our connection to nature.
